Liberdade Sobral (Ceramista)

Liberdade Sobral was born in a village near Odemira, Portugal.
She is a naïf ceramist with an impetuous creative capacity and an impressive originality in the manipulation of shapes and colours that thrive from her imaginary.

She discovered this vocation when she was 50 years old, sculpting a saint out of cement, as her way of paying a promise made for the life of her daughter who suffered from a severe disease.
Having spent most of her life caring for the crops and cattle, she set on to sculpt imaginary animal figures out of cement, in natural size and bright colours, which she placed near the stables, to the amazement of her neighbours… “It is so that they don’t feel lonely”, she justifies.

She now works in clay with empirical mastery, giving life and form to unique figures of great sensitivity and rare beauty.

Whoever visits her in order to admire her pieces does not leave the farm without taking, as an offering, cabbages or season vegetables she picks herself!
